Brothers, for men over 20 having high cholesterol and not doing anything to treat it could lead to a massive heart attack, crippling stroke as well as damage to various arteries. Lower Cholesterol Naturally - What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is made in the liver. It is a waxy fat-like substance that is essential for life. It is critical in the production of certain hormones (DHEA testosterone, estrogen etc.) and bile acids.

While cholesterol is necessary for cell building, too much of it in the blood can lead to it adhering to the artery walls causing blood flow to be restricted.

I'm sure at one point or another you have heard the terms "good" and "bad" cholesterol. While I also had heard these terms it wasn't until recently that found out what they actually meant.

The "bad" cholesterol is referred to as LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein). LDL takes cholesterol to parts of the body that need it. Along the way LDL can adhere on the blood vessel walls, cause plaque to build up and this could need to coronary artery disease as well as a host of other problems.

American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that the levels of LDL be less than 100mg/dl.

The "good" cholesterol is referred to as HDL (High Density Lipoprotein)actually helps to remove cholesterol from the blood vessel walls and takes it to the liver where it is processed and eliminated from the body.

ADA recommends that the HDL levels should be over 40mg/dl for men and over 50mg/dl for women.

Total Cholesterol levels should be less than 200 mg/dl

Triglycerides are another kind of "blood fat". The ADA recommends the it should be less than 150 mg/dl
